Sex, Colorado Corrections, and Videotape

CANON CITY, Colo., Department of Corrections Capt. Glinda Vendetta, an employee here at the Fremont County Correctional Facility, was relieved of duty last week for allegations of sexual misconduct with an inmate. The misconduct was alleged to have taken place for several months.

A Correctional Officer (C.O.) working in the prisons kitchen, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of losing his job, said Vendetta, who was the senior officer in charge of the dinning hall at the facility, was caught on camera having sex with the inmate in a kitchen storage room.

The victim worked closely with Vendetti in her sound proof office -- often alone with her behind a locked door for hours, and accompanying her on errands around the prison. The man was part of the “Captain’s Crew,” a group of specially selected inmates who worked doing special job's for Vendetti. In the past, Vendetti had been criticized for choosing mostly muscled white supremacists for this coveted crew. The inmate Vendetti is accused of having sex with is of Hispanic descent.

According to the kitchen C. O., Vendetti had been accused of similar actions at another Colorado corrections facility, indicating a possible pattern of abuse for the senior corrections officer, who has been married five times.

Department of Corrections policy states sex between staff and inmates is a criminal offense. Since Vendetti was in a position of trust and authority over her victim, she faces a possible stiff sentence as a sex offender with life-time supervision after a lengthy prison term.

However, in Fremont County, dominated by prisons and law enforcement, Vendetti could end up with a light sentence or possibly no criminal charges at all. In a similar case involving a male prison guard at a female prison heard in Fremont County District Court by Judge Julie Marshall, the male guard was given only two days in jail. In comparison, Marshall has sentenced dozens of non-law enforcement offenders to life sentences for crimes involving no victims at all.

Sometimes it is good to be the king -- or queen, and in Coloradans Fremont County...corrections is king.
